One may hear the shaman, the Oleboni, talk about Engai as he kills a black sheep in order to help the healing of animals or people that are sick or dying. He believes the healing life force of the sheep is transferred to those in need and carried through his hands and those of every of the every true Maasai healer.

Using animals for medicine in this way is rare. Traditionally the Maasai eat very little meat as their herds are symbols of their wealth and worldly power.
  ORETETI, POWER OF PLACE
On occasion the African Living Spa healer feels the need to access more healing power than that provided by photo-medicine preparations alone. If this is the case one maybe invited to visit the Oreteti Trees in the neighboring Ngorongoro Forest Reserve. The trees are locally revered for having healing powers not only in their leaves and branches but within the realm they create, the tree canopy itself. It is believed that this healing energy of the ancient Oreteti Tree contributes great ‘Power of Place’ to the healer’s prescribed remedies. Traditional beliefs maintain that consultations and treatments undertaken within this uniquely energized environment deepen the effectiveness of all healing work and medicines.
  PERSONAL HEALING JOURNEYS
For those that want an longer and more intimate connection with the healing power of African wild spaces and indigenous cultures there is the option of travelling for several days with one of our guides on a deeply Personal Healing Journey.

The journey begins with a consultation and treatments in your cottage or the thatched Engishon Supat - House of Life dwelling in Namnyak Village. It then continues in a comfortable vehicle into the beauty of the local forest or the mystery of the deepest bush country. We can accommodate up to 4 persons who are family or lifelong friends on a single journey. This experience is offered within a two-week schedule and detailed in the Personal Healing Journey section of the website.

Engai, the protector is the spirit of the place that provides everything necessary for life in the Maasai tradition.  Engai can be thought of as similar to the healing power of Mother Nature.  Some Maasai prayers refer to Engai as male, others as female.  One song praises Naamoni aiyai, “She to whom I pray,” while others address Olasera ingumok, “He of many colors.”  To the Maasai, Engai’s greatness encompasses male and female alike as they see the world and everything in is as a complete and perfect whole.

“Savannah stretches endlessly

Heaven looms above

Eagle-wing clouds watch before the thunder and lighting

Maasai young run back and forth

like well-fed calves

Women always busy before the rain

Elders face the fleeing sun

Lines of cattle head home, warriors watch -

When herdsmen’s chores are done,

they hope for many golden dawns.”
